Reader Question: Should I Add My Teen Before or After the Road Test?
A parent asks whether to add a soon-to-be-licensed 16-year-old to the policy now. The answer depends on the permit rule and one phone call.

Answer in brief
Most insurers cover permit holders at no charge and require you to add the driver when the licence is issued. Call before the test to confirm, then add them the day they pass; a gap is worse than a few days of premium.

"My daughter takes her road test next month. Do I need to add her to our policy now, or can I wait until she passes?" — reader in Ohio
Call your insurer this week and ask two things: whether permit holders in your household are covered automatically, and what the deadline is for adding her once licensed. The usual answers are "yes" and "immediately", but a few insurers want permit holders listed, and some give a 14- or 30-day window.
Why not just wait
If she drives after passing and before being added, and the insurer's rule required disclosure, a claim could be denied for misrepresentation. The premium for a few extra days is trivial next to that risk.
Use the call to get a quote
Ask what she will add to the premium on each vehicle and how the insurer assigns her. Then get two or three outside quotes for the household with her included. Insurers disagree sharply about teens, and the renewal after she is added is the best time to compare. The own policy vs parents' guide covers the rest.
